Twenty Two Years

Happy 22nd birthday to me! I feel closer to the void now more than ever.

I have a lot going on in this noggin of mine, so indulge me (consider it a birthday present) as I let some of that spill onto this page. 22 bits of advice from 22 years of life, as if I have this whole thing figured out:

  1. Forget the idea of “guilty pleasure.” Own the stuff that you like!
  2. Take the first five minutes of every day to adjust your mindset. So phones, no music, just you and your thoughts.
  3. Write every day no matter what. No excuses!
  4. “When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty.” Thomas Jefferson (-‘s idea, no proof he actually said this)
  5. Take as many tries as you need to get it right. Repetition is your friend.
  6. Hard work is supposed to drain you and you’re gonna hate it. But it’s the only way to get what you want.
  7. Own you privilege and never lie about it. That shit always, always, always shows through in the work you do.
  8. Don’t forget the people that helped you when you needed it most.
  9. Let time do its’ job.
  10. Branch out with your music tastes because life is short and genres have hidden gems.
  11. Don’t push it. Know when to stop.
  12. Believe people when they tell you about something you’ve never experienced.
  13. If it speaks to you, listen to it.
  14. Keep up with a non-commercial passion, something you do not because it will get you money but something you do out of pure enjoyment of it.
  15. Make yourself a website.
  16. Take a stand for something, because your opinion isn’t only worth something on election day. Join a protest, write a letter, donate money, fight the good fight.
  17. It’s not over ’til it’s over.
  18. Follow your gut.
  19. Tip well.
  20. Always say thank you. Practice gratefulness – life is without rewards if you go it alone.
  21. Read for pleasure, even if it’s the back of a cereal box or the safety poster on the subway.
  22. Celebrate birthdays! They are milestones of your strength, resilience, and growth. Do not take time for granted.
